As I've mentioned in the discussion board, I believe you are on a very enlightening track with your research. I would encourage you to perhaps read on the debate of uniforms in a school setting and the results of them. I know I have seen what uniforms can do and perhaps for you reading literature on this issue could help you gain a better understanding.
ReplyDeleteI love the topic. I am all for uniforms or a strict dress code. I feel that it has a lot to do with discipline issues, and discipline issues affect grades. I agree with Raegan that you should check out uniforms. When I become principal, I'd like to implement uniforms if I go to a school that doesn't have them.
ReplyDeleteThis is a pretty hot topic of conversation at our school, but we have yet to implement a dress code policy at our high school. We do have a dress code policy at our middle schools though. It's very interesting. When I originally asked why the middle school has one and the high school didn't, I was told because in middle school is where students are forming themselves and discovering their own style. They said it's also the time when students are figuring out when kids have more expensive items and they want to make it more equal across the board so feelings aren't getting hurt. Our dress code is jeans(no rips/holes/etc), belt (can be your own style except chains), polo (only solid colors and no logos bigger than 1X2). Polos can only have one button undone. So basically a student can only have a belt and shoes of their own choosing. Once they get to our high school though, the only dress code we have is that straps must be as wide as your id card and shorts/skirts to fingertip length.I think it will be interesting to see the outcome of missing school from the violations. ReplyDeleteWhat a great topic. As a high school teacher in Texas I dread when the weather turns warm! I think standardized dress would eliminate so many problems in our schools. I look forward to following your research. Are you changing the dress code for next year and comparing issues from 2012-13 to 2013-14?
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to see the results of your study. Being in elementary, all the schools I have worked for have always had uniforms and I do think it has an impact on students behaviors. But I think it probably has a much greater impact in the middle school, high school age students, since they are so much more aware of the way they look and how others look. I would be very interested to see what your research finds. I think maybe adding a focus group of teachers, and maybe also one of students, to help give you more input from the teacher's perspectives as well as the students perspectives. Good luck with your research, I look forward to reading about the progress of your research.
